Future Career Day 2025: Budding Professionals Discover the World of Interior Architecture

On 13 November 2025, DOBAS hosted seven students for an action-packed Future Career Day. By doing drawing exercises, project site visits and group projects, they gained hands-on insights into what working in an interior architecture office is like – beyond gender roles and clichés.

National Future Career Day: A Time for New Perspectives

National Future Career Day is not your run-of-the-mill taster day. There is a special focus on «switching sides», i.e. encouraging young girls and boys to learn about jobs in which their gender is typically underrepresented. The day aims to get young people to focus on their own interests and talents – and not merely adhere to rigid, outdated gender roles. DOBAS participated again in 2025, inviting seven students for an eventful day.

The day began at 8.00 a.m. with a welcome in the meeting room. Then, with the help of our apprentices Solina and Lena, I took the pupils on a tour of the office premises, giving them a first overview of the work we do at DOBAS.

Drafting and Planning: Designing Interiors of Their Own

Then we jumped straight into hands-on work. The participants were given an introduction to technical drawing and learned how to colour-code plans. With this knowledge, they designed their own floor plans. Additionally, I briefly introduced our two departments as well as the various professions at DOBAS.

Experiencing Projects Up Close: Hotel Schweizerhof and LUKB

After a quick mid-morning snack break, we presented two recent Creation projects: Brasserie VICO in the five-star Hotel Schweizerhof Luzern and the head office of the Luzerner Kantonalbank (LUKB). We started by looking over the plans of the projects before going to visit the sites of the finished projects with our interior architect Isabelle.

Teamwork with a Concept: The Cafeteria

Once we got back to the office, we were welcomed by a well-deserved lunch: the students got to enjoy a relaxing pizza break with the rest of the DOBAS team.

A group project was on the agenda in the afternoon. The students worked in small teams to develop creative concepts for a cafeteria. They then presented their designs in front of the group.

The Wrap Up: Freehand Sketching and An Open Q&A

At the end of the day, the participants practised free-hand sketching again. At its conclusion there was an open Q&A session where participants had the opportunity to ask about whatever interested them – from job profiles and apprenticing paths to the daily tasks involved in interior architecture.

We want to thank all participants for their interest and look forward to inspiring more young people to pursue careers in interior architecture in the future.

Would you like to try out working as a draftsperson specialised in Interior Architecture at DOBAS? Then I look forward to hearing from you.
